Guanyuan Market, a famous flower, bird, fish, and insect market in Beijing. More than ten years ago, the old official garden changed its location and moved to the vicinity of today's Zizhu Bridge, becoming the new official garden market. In Xinguan Garden, the traditional flower, bird, fish, and insect markets are showing some new changes. In addition to traditional ornamental fish, insects, calligraphy and painting, bracelets, etc., a large proportion of young people's newly popular pets such as small pets and climbing pets have also been added. And the shopkeepers of these stores have also been updated, from middle-aged and elderly people in their fifties and sixties to young people in their twenties and thirties. These young people have opened up a new Xintiandi in the new official garden because of their hobby of "entering the circle", and have taken raising and selling pets as their new career choice.

Entered the industry due to hobbies

Entered the pet and climbing pet circle for 13 years and is 35 years old. The shop owner runs 3 stores

The New Guanyuan Flower, Bird, Fish and Insect Market is divided into two levels, with four channels on each level, and small shops distributed on both sides of the channels. In addition to the well-known tropical ornamental fish, grasshoppers, and cultural toys, there are also dozens of small pet and climbing pet shops.

This is a blizzard, this is a highway, this is a cow snake, it mainly depends on what kind of snake you like and what color you like... "27 year old Yu Jilin introduced the different types of snakes in the store to the customers. Some meat pink corn snakes have white round spots, some white king snakes have two black straight lines on their backs, and some pig nosed snakes are" sleeping soundly ".

Not long ago, Yu Jilin was a graphic designer who chose to resign due to excessive work pressure. In July of this year, he came to work at a pet climbing store. "Now the pet climbing market is good and very popular among young people. Coincidentally, I am also very interested in this, so I came to the store

When talking about the reasons why he is capable of doing this job, Yu Jilin slightly turned his body, placed his hand on his waist, and gestured, "I started raising spiders when I was this old." His first spider was Orange Babu. It's so cool! "Later, Yu Jilin successively raised spider varieties such as Red Rose and Honduras Curly Hair, and his family used a three-layer shelf to stack small boxes for raising spiders.

His first orange Babu was raised for over ten years and has now passed away. "I think this is where human selflessness lies. I know I won't develop any feelings for crawling pets, but when facing weak animals, I am still willing to invest energy and effort in taking care of them

The greatest charm of reptiles lies in their diverse species. Whether you like cute or fierce styles, you can find almost anything you can think of and observe in the animal world. And liking is a feeling, some likes are difficult to explain. "35 year old Chen Yao has been in the pet and crawling circle for 13 years and now runs three pet and crawling shops in Xinguan Garden. He is a senior enthusiast in the circle. He recalled that his first entry into the industry came from a mane lion lizard given by a friend, and at that time, his first impression was "too handsome".

The maned lion lizard is almost the most gentle reptile and the most suitable climbing pet for entry-level athletes, "Chen Yao said as he took out an orange maned lion lizard from the glass box and placed it on his shoulder." It will lie on its shoulder and stay still, always accompanying you. It interacts with people and is quite obedient

With the experience of breeding maned lion lizards, Chen Yao began to raise and breed leopard geckos, spiders, lizards, and sell them to his family and friends. Later, as the number of climbing pets at home increased, he decided to open a store in the flower and bird market. The empty store is gradually being filled with breeding boxes, landscaping, heating equipment, and introducing new species, and the variety of climbing pets in the store is gradually increasing.

Nowadays, Chen Yao's shop has five crawling pets: lizards, snakes, frogs, mantises, and spiders, each of which is further divided into 3-10 subcategories. When it comes to climbing the pet circle, Chen Yao sighed, "Cooks may not necessarily enjoy stir frying, but people who keep pets must do so because they love pets. Almost all businesses have gradually transformed from enthusiasts to breeders

Other young people working in Xinguan Garden also confirmed Chen Yao's statement. They almost all choose to work at pet climbing shops because they enjoy climbing pets. Many people have raised various pets since childhood and have rich experience in breeding. After growing up, although I studied different majors and worked in different types of jobs, now I have all entered this industry by chance.

In Xin Guan Yuan, many small pets and climbing pet shops have young employees aged 20 to 30. Their usual working hours are similar to those of ordinary office workers, coming to the store nine in the morning and six in the evening every day. Their main responsibilities include cleaning, feeding pets, and receiving guests.

There are new sales laws

Playing and touching allow customers to establish a connection with their pets

The young staff members at Xin Guan Yuan have their own unique sales methods. Playing and touching help them quickly establish contact with customers and bring people and pets closer together. In a small pet store, a young clerk is playing interactive games with a sugar glider on his shoulder. With pointed ears, round eyes, slender tail, and pure white fur, the sugar glider lay on the shoulder of the shop assistant and slowly crawled along her neck and collar.

Subsequently, she took it off her shoulder, held it in her palm, and let it embrace her thumb with two small hands. She rhythmically stroked the head of the sugar glider with her index finger, and then slowly handed it over to the customer. The customer tried to hold its body with one hand and shoot a video with their phone in the other hand to show to their friends.

Chirp, chirp... "The sugar glider let out a piercing cry, and the guests were somewhat surprised why it made such a sound. The shop assistant explained, "It's not familiar with you, as long as you're familiar with it." As she spoke, she put the sugar glider back in her hand, played with it alternately, and the sugar glider quieted down.

Buying a small pet is mainly based on eye contact. Place the sugar glider on the customer's shoulder or hand to let them feel it, play with it, and try to match it. "19-year-old Li Ran works part-time at a small pet store during the summer, and sells about 10 sugar gliders from her every week. Every time a customer comes to the store, Li Ran will first inquire about their preferred type and color, and then help them choose the appropriate breed, introducing the origin and habits of the pet to the customer. Her guests are also relatively young, mostly between the ages of 20 and 40.

The "pan play" sales method is not only suitable for small pet stores, but also an "ice breaking" method for climbing pet stores. In another climbing pet store not far away, a young clerk is playing with a pink little snake. I saw the shop assistant take out a small snake from the plastic box, gently hold it between his fingers, let the snake's slender body meander forward, and slowly alternate his hands. The snake then swims lightly in his palm and mid air.

The young visitor tentatively reached out his hand, and as soon as his fingers touched the body of the little snake, he immediately withdrew. However, he couldn't help but reach out again and stroke the snake's back, bringing a unique feeling to the smooth touch.

Chen Yao, the owner of a pet climbing shop, told Beijing Youth Daily reporters that in the early stages of opening the shop, an average of 10 customers were scared by the lizards, snakes and other animals in the shop every day and couldn't help but scream. Nowadays, with the efforts of young shop assistants to play with climbing pets while introducing them to customers, people's acceptance of climbing pets is constantly increasing. The 'screaming frequency' of customers has also significantly decreased, and it may not be possible to encounter another screaming customer in 10 days, "Chen Yao said.

Chen Yao said that the first reaction of most people when they see snake like animals is fear, worrying that they are poisonous, will bite people, and so on, which is also a major challenge in the sales of climbing pets. But if the staff can guide customers to touch small animals after they arrive at the store, it can to some extent eliminate this mentality, which also increases people's acceptance of climbing pets.
